Statutory occupational health care

The Occupational Health Care Act requires that a company must arrange occupational health care for all its employees. In practice, this means that if your company has even just one employee, occupational health care services must be arranged for him or her.

You can obtain occupational health care services from a municipal health centre or public utility, a private clinic or establish your own occupational health centre by yourself or with other employers. The minimum requirements for occupational health care are listed in law, but you can also provide your employees with more extensive occupational health care services. That way, you will be able to support the health and wellbeing of your employees in the best possible way.

What is included in statutory occupational health care?

The statutory task of occupational health care is to prevent health hazards resulting from work through a variety of services. The services are designed to help your company promote the coping of employees at work and assess the quality and effectiveness of occupational health care. Statutory services include:

  • survey of the workplace which assesses the impact of the work conditions on the health of employees
  • medical examinations
  • proposing measures to improve work conditions and promote the capacity for work
  • planning and implementation of workplace health promotion activities in cooperation with the company
  • providing information, advice and guidance
  • guidance for maintaining first aid preparedness at the workplace
  • guidance to rehabilitation if the employee’s capacity for work is reduced

If necessary, occupational health care may cooperate, for example, with the representatives of another occupational health care provider, social insurance or industrial safety authorities.

  • Cooperate with occupational health care in a planned and target-oriented way.
  • Prepare a written contract about the organisation of occupational health care with a occupational health care service provider.
  • Ensure the occupational safety of your employees by investing in the safety of the work environment and conditions.
  • Prevent occupational accidents, occupational diseases and other health hazards resulting from the work or work environment.
  • Take out an insurance policy that is in accordance with the Occupational Accidents, Injuries and Diseases Act against occupational accidents and occupational diseases.
