Wildfires continue to ravage Australia after several months, and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland has advised against unnecessary travel in areas affected by fires. Changes in travel plans are possible as the result of wildfires. We have summarised important information about traveller's insurance below.
Cancelling a trip
Traveller’s Crisis Cover included in Pohjola Traveller’s Insurance covers the costs of cancelling a trip due to a natural catastrophe in the travel destination when the trip is planned to begin in less than 60 days. Travel Cancellation Cover included in OP-Visa Platinum cards may also cover cancellation costs. Before claiming compensation with us, you must cancel the trip with the tour operator or service provider and file a claim for any refunds to which you are entitled. You can claim compensation for the costs of a cancelled trip in OP eServices.
Our other travel insurance products do not cover the costs of a cancelling a trip due to conditions at the travel destination.
Traveller’s Crisis Cover included in Pohjola Traveller’s Insurance and Evacuation Cover included in Corporate Travel Cover cover the costs of evacuating from a natural catastrophe. If the Australian authorities advise travellers to leave an area affected by fire or its vicinity, we may cover additional travel and accommodation costs resulting from the evacuation. For detailed information on coverable expenses, see your insurance terms and conditions. If you have any questions about your insurance coverage, call the Pohjola Insurance telephone service.
Our other travel insurance products do not cover evacuation expenses or the costs of interrupting a trip due to conditions at the travel destination.
If you need medical assistance
Injuries suffered due to wildfires may be covered as a travel accident. Psychological symptoms due to wildfires may be covered as travel illness, provided that no symptoms existed before the trip.

If your flight (or some other mode of transport with a booking) is unable to depart on time due to wildfires and the delay lasts for four hours or longer, you can claim compensation for the costs of the alternative route under Pohjola Traveller’s Insurance. Most of our other traveller’s insurance products offer reimbursement of expenses after a qualifying period, as specified in the insurance terms and conditions.
If you miss a connection due to wildfires, you can claim compensation for the resulting additional travel and accommodation costs under your Traveller’s Insurance. However, you must always first claim compensation from your tour operator or service provider.
