Debit card for a child or young person

As a child or young person already has their own hobbies and comings and goings, a personal debit card makes daily life easier not only for kids but also their parents.

Personal card for spending

Earnings from summer jobs and weekly pocket money can be deposited in the child’s or young person’s personal account, and the card can be used to pay for snacks and hobbies.

When a parent has the right to access the child’s or young person’s account, it is shown on the parent’s OP-mobile and online bank and the parent can conveniently transfer money to the child’s account. The best way to manage the account and spending is to keep only a reasonable amount of money on the account. In addition, it pays to set suitable spending and withdrawal limits for the account.

The cards available for minors are OP Basic and OP Debit.

One card and daily banking services are free of charge for customers aged under 26 years.

Apply for a debit card for a child

You can order a debit card for a minor through our Customer Service, but finishing the order always requires a visit to the branch.

Book an appointment at a bank branch

If both parents cannot visit the branch at the same time, one of them can create a power of attorney in advance to authorise the other parent to apply for the child’s card. OP’s customer can create a power of attorney on the op.fi service under ‘My profile’ after login. It pays to create the power of attorney in one go for all minor’s banking transactions that are wanted.

Sign a power of attorney on the banking affairs of an underage child

The minor must be present in person at the branch when applying for the card so that matters related to the use of the card can be talked through with the minor. The minor must also bring a personal ID document, such as a passport or a moped driving licence, for verification of identity.

Please contact OP’s Customer Service if one of the parents does not have an OP user ID.
