Parking Cover – optional parking cover for comprehensive motor vehicle insurance

Parking Cover is an optional form of supplementary cover available for passenger cars with Super Motor Insurance and motorcycles and campervans with Maxi Motor Insurance. Parking Cover helps if your vehicle is damaged while it is parked.

What is Parking Cover?

Parking Cover is an optional form of supplementary cover that can be added to Super Motor Insurance, which is the most comprehensive policy for passenger cars, as well as to Maxi Motor Insurance for motorcycles and campervans. You can claim compensation under Parking Cover if your parked vehicle was hit by a party that remains unidentified and you can specify the exact place and time of the damage. Your deductible under Parking Cover is EUR 200.

Loss event

Thomas has parked his passenger car in the car park at his local shopping centre. When he returned, Thomas notices a nasty-looking scratch about 20 cm long in the surface of the paint on the left side of the car. Someone must have hit the car while they were parking in the adjacent space.

Compensation situation 1

Thomas is unable to identify the party that caused the damage. The guilty party, therefore, remains unknown. Thomas’ car was covered by Super Motor Insurance with optional supplementary Parking Cover. Thomas contacts Pohjola’s Repair Advisor. The Repair Advisor handles the repair and reports the damage to Pohjola Insurance. The damage is covered by the Parking Cover added to the Super Motor Insurance, and Thomas only has to pay the EUR 200 deductible.

Compensation situation 2

Using footage from the security camera in the car park, Thomas is able to identify the party that caused the damage. Thomas notes down the registration number of the vehicle that caused the damage and sends a loss report to his own insurance company, Pohjola Insurance. He includes the details of the vehicle that caused the damage in his report. The claim is handled by the other vehicle’s insurance company, and compensation is eventually paid under the motor liability insurance of the guilty party. Thomas does not need to pay a deductible.

Points to note

If you are able to identify the party that caused the damage, you can, in principle, claim compensation under the motor liability insurance belonging to the party that caused the damage.

In such cases, all you need to do is file a loss report for the damage, specifying the registration number of the vehicle that caused the damage, as well as the contact details of the driver of the vehicle, if you have them.

What should I do if parking damage occurs?

If another vehicle hits your vehicle while it is parked, you can claim compensation under the motor liability insurance of the party responsible for the damage or under the optional Parking Cover in your comprehensive motor vehicle insurance.

If you identify the party that caused the damage, take their contact details. In such cases, the loss will be reported to that person’s vehicle insurance company, and compensation will be claimed under that person’s motor liability insurance.

If you cannot identify the party that caused the damage, take your damaged vehicle to the nearest Pohjola Repair Advisor shop. The Repair Advisor will handle the repairs and compensation claim on your behalf. You will receive a claim settlement decision when visiting the Repair Advisor and will only pay a possible deductible on your visit.
