Financial literacy competition

With the Association for Teachers of History and Social Studies HYOL, we enhance the personal finance skills of ninth-graders in the national Financial Literacy Competition and in the events connected to it. The competition is held each spring in schools around Finland, with the goal of encouraging ninth-graders to improve their financial skills.

The questions in the annual Financial Literary Competition are based on the social studies syllabus for comprehensive schools and on current issues in economics. Participating in the competition is voluntary, and the social studies teacher of the school is responsible for registering students for the competition. Registration is completed on the website of the Association for Teachers of History and Social Studies in Finland, HYOL.

Competition schedule:

  • Registration period 4 December 2023 to 16 February 2024.
  • Financial Literacy Competition in schools across Finland on Thursday, 11 April 2024 from 9.00 to 11.00.
  • National finals in Helsinki on Wednesday, 22 May 2024

The best student in each school receives a small prize, and the three best students receive diplomas. The top three students in the final competition receive cash prizes as follows: 500 euros for the winner, 350 euros for the runner-up and 250 euros for third place.

First hosted in 1966, the Financial Literacy Competition is Finland's oldest competition for schoolchildren and has established its position as a springtime activity for generations of ninth graders.

In spring 2023, more than 17 000 students from 301 schools around Finland participated in the competition. Based on the preliminary competition in schools, a total of 30 students were invited to the national finals held at OP Financial Group's office in Vallila, Helsinki. The three best students in the finals received cash prizes.
