What does the boat insurance for a sailing boat cover?

A sailing boat’s comprehensive motor vehicle insurance covers if, for example, your sailing boat is stolen, burns down or is damaged as a result of running aground or colliding, a fire or during transportation. Medium Motor Insurance for a sailing boat covers theft and fire losses, but excludes boat losses, such as collisions or running aground, from compensation.

A boat insurance for a sailing boat is also valid in sailing competitions and always includes the boat’s liability and legal expenses insurance policies. General liability insurance provides compensation if you cause a loss with your boat to another boat or boater to others for which you are liable by law. If necessary, you can increase the general liability insurance compensation amounts for free for sailing competitions.

The commonest loss is running aground, but losses can occur also when the boat is not being used.

Trossi service ensures free assistance for your sailing boat

No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen aboard. If lives are not in danger, saving a sailing boat that is disabled is usually subject to a charge. A cost price is charged for towing a sailing boat that is not in an emergency, and it can run to up to hundreds of euros, depending on the size of the rescue boat and the duration of the operation.

If you subscribe to the Trossi service of the Finnish Lifeboat Institution, your sailing boat will be saved free of charge. If your journey is interrupted, you will be towed to the nearest port and receive assistance in finding a repairer. When you subscribe to the service, you will also support voluntary rescue services at sea and on lakes.

Validity in sailing competitions

Boat insurance is valid when you take part in or train for a sailing competition registered by the Finnish Sailing and Boating Federation or other sailing competition.

Sail and rigging losses during sailing competitions and related official training carries a 25% additional deductible that is calculated from the loss amount subtracted with the basic deductible.

Organisers of international sailing competitions may demand participants to provide a written certificate on a boat’s general liability insurance. In certain situations, the organiser may also demand higher maximum compensations under the boat’s general liability insurance than normally. If this is necessary, the maximum compensation under general liability insurance can be increased for free by contacting our customer service.
