Travel insurance when pregnant – safe travel during pregnancy

Are you planning a trip during your pregnancy? Travelling when pregnant is quite possible, and it is lovely to enjoy personal time before the birth of your child. Before taking a trip when pregnant, it is still good practice to find out about possible risks and check your travel insurance cover.

Things to consider when travelling pregnant

Pregnancy does not prevent you travelling, but you should consider the time of your trip. It could be a good idea to take the trip when the tiredness and nausea of early pregnancy are no longer bothering you.

Towards the end of pregnancy, you may start to feel uncomfortable, which will make enjoying your trip difficult. If you are unsure about being able to take flights or to travel abroad when pregnant, you can contact your maternity clinic.

Most airlines accept passengers until the 36th week of pregnancy, but you may need to take a medical certificate with you. Check your airline’s rules on pregnant passengers before departure.

Does the unborn child need travel insurance?

This depends on the kind of travel insurance the pregnant person themself has. If the pregnant parent has individual continuous traveller’s insurance, their insurance does not cover sudden changes in pregnancy during a trip. In this case, the unborn child needs separate traveller's insurance.

The advantage of traveller's insurance is that it is always valid. The insurance acquired for the unborn child covers the child's trips until they are 100 years old. This means that the travel insurance follows the child through their life and covers trips to relatives as a baby and the child's first independent trips later, for example.

If the pregnant parent has a fixed-term travel insurance policy that is in force, it also covers the unborn child during the trip. If you travel multiple times either in Finland or abroad during your pregnancy, a continuous travel insurance policy is the easiest and most affordable option. If you know that you'll take only one trip in Finland or abroad during your pregnancy, fixed-term travel insurance suits your needs better.

Frequently Asked Questions about travelling when pregnant

Travel insurance for an unborn child covers expenses if your state of pregnancy changes suddenly and unexpectedly during the trip, and the unborn child requires immediate medical treatment. Such situations include miscarriage, the entanglement of the umbilical cord around the neck of the foetus and premature birth.

Travel insurance can be beneficial in many different situations, but it does not cover all possible expenses related to pregnancy. For example, travel insurance does not cover pregnancy, childbirth, abortion, or infertility or any related illnesses or complications.

Even a normal pregnancy involves complications, the most common and least dangerous ones being back pain and nausea. These common pregnancy complications are not covered as travel illness.

Pregnancy can cause treatment expenses through maternity clinic visits or other normal medical examinations, for example. These expenses are not covered by travel insurance, but Pohjola Baby Insurance does cover some of the pregnant parent's public healthcare expenses and medications during pregnancy.
