Insurance for a moped or motor scooter with the right coverage for you
Moped insurance consists of mandatory motor liability insurance for a moped and voluntary comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. You can choose between a limited Medium Motor Insurance or the more extensive Maxi Motor Insurance for your moped or scooter.
Our most comprehensive option for mopeds, Maxi Motor Insurance, also covers vandalism
By choosing the more comprehensive Maxi Motor Insurance for your moped, your insurance will compensate the costs of vandalism to your moped or motor scooter.
The cost of moped and motor scooter insurance depends on the time of year
Seasonally rated moped insurance is valid throughout the year, but the insurance cost is automatically lower in winter than summer.

Moped insurance: Mandatory motor liability insurance for mopeds and optional comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for mopeds
A moped always requires statutory motor liability insurance that covers personal injury to the driver and passenger. Losses suffered by the innocent party are also compensated from motor liability insurance.
A moped’s or electric moped’s motor liability insurance does not cover your own moped or scooter’s losses, but you can prepare against them with comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. Moped insurance covers situations like the theft of your moped, your moped being vandalised or your moped being damaged in a collision.
You can insure an electric moped or electric scooter with the same insurance
Our moped insurance can also be used to insure an electric moped or electric scooter. Electric mopeds and scooters require motor liability insurance, when
- their engine power is over 250 W or their speed exceeds 25 km/h when pedalling
- the electric moped or electric scooter belongs to vehicle category L1e-A or L1eB
You can purchase motor liability insurance and comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for an electric moped or scooter easily on this page.
Take out moped insurance under the name of the adolescent using it
Often a moped or electric moped is the first motor vehicle used independently by adolescents in traffic. To ride a moped, you have to know the traffic rules, have a driving licence in addition to being careful and at least 15 years of age.
Insurance must be taken out for a moped, electric moped, scooter or electric scooter under the name of the vehicle’s primary user. If the user is 15-17 years old, the insurance is granted with the parent’s consent. To do this, please contact our customer service.
What does moped insurance cover?
|Maxi Motor Insurance||Medium Motor Insurance|
|Mandatory motor liability insurance
Personal injuries and damage to the other party’s property caused by collision
Your moped is stolen
Your moped is damaged in a collision with an animal
Your moped is damaged by fire
You incur legal expenses in civil disputes related to the moped’s ownership, for example
You operate your vehicle in a non-EEA country within the Green Card system and become personally liable for damages as the guilty party in a road accident, and the damages are not compensated from motor liability insurance under the law of the country in question
Your moped is damaged due to a crash, collision or swerving off the road, for example
Your moped is tipped over on purpose or vandalised in some other way
We will compensate the vehicle’s owner, such as a dealership or finance company, for loss of or damage to the vehicle not otherwise covered under our terms and conditions
If you have temporarily decommissioned your moped from traffic use, remember to recommission it before you leave for a ride again.
Seasonally rated moped insurance saves time and money
Wondering about the price of moped insurance or looking for an affordable moped insurance policy? Moped insurance is seasonally rated, so you don’t have to worry about interrupting your cover because of the cost in winter. This means that while your moped insurance is valid all year round, the lower winter premium takes into account the fact that you drive your moped less or not at all in winter weather.
Therefore, thanks to a seasonally rated insurance, you or your minor policyholder do not have to decommission the moped or take out a laid-up insurance if the moped was not used during the winter. In spring, the moped can be taken into use immediately when the weather permits, as the insurance cover is ready. If the moped is not used at all during the summer, you can still decommission it and receive a refund from the price of the moped insurance.
It is also worth considering when comparing different alternatives and moped insurance prices the type of insurance that best suits your needs and offers the most comprehensive cover for you and your vehicle in case of damage or loss. The cheapest moped insurance is not necessarily the best one in case of loss or damage. When you select a moped insurance policy that helps you in case of damage or loss and covers the related costs, your vehicle is covered by a genuinely low-cost moped insurance policy.
How much does moped insurance cost?
The price of moped insurance is determined by the properties of the moped or scooter, the selected coverage, and the policyholder’s details. You can easily learn the price by entering the registration number into the calculator located on this page.
You can pay the insurance premiums of a moped or scooter in one or several instalments. By paying the entire year’s premium in one instalment, you will receive a 2.5% mode of payment discount. If you are a Pohjola Insurance prime customer, you will also receive a 7% discount on your moped’s comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. You receive a 3% additional discount on comprehensive motor vehicle insurance if you are also an OP cooperative bank owner-customer.
Accidents can be prevented by being careful and by following safety regulations.
A moped must always be stored locked or in a locked space. A moped is properly locked when the keys are out of the ignition and the steering lock or the immobiliser is activated. In the absence of such devices, the moped must be locked with a brake, chain or cable lock to prevent unauthorised use.
It is also good to remember that mopeds may not be tuned, as riding a tuned in traffic moped is illegal.
