Motor liability insurance – mandatory cover for all vehicles

Motor liability insurance is mandatory insurance for all motor vehicles used in traffic. In the event of an accident, motor liability insurance covers all personal injuries incurred by all parties and any property damage to the innocent party. Motor liability insurance does not cover damage to the vehicle or property of the guilty party.

If you want to cover your vehicle against vandalism, theft, animal collision or parking damage, for instance, you can take out voluntary comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for your vehicle in addition to motor liability insurance.

Here is how you earn motor liability insurance bonus:

When you take out motor liability insurance for your vehicle, the bonus is determined in accordance with your driving and claims history. If this concerns your first instance of having motor liability insurance, the insurance bonus is 40%, while a 80% maximum bonus is immediately available for more experienced drivers.

A full insurance period of driving, without a claim for damage to be indemnified by your motor liability insurance, earns you a higher motor liability insurance bonus for the following insurance period. For example, if you are a new driver, the motor liability insurance bonus of your vehicle will develop as follows:

  • Motor liability insurance bonus after the 1st insurance period 53%
  • Motor liability insurance bonus after the 2nd insurance period 64%
  • Motor liability insurance bonus after the 3rd insurance period 70%
  • Motor liability insurance bonus after the 4th insurance period 76%
  • Motor liability insurance bonus after the 5th insurance period 80%

Retaining motor liability insurance bonus in the event of an accident

The motor liability insurance bonus will increase from one insurance period to another towards the maximum bonus if no accident compensated from motor liability insurance occurs during the insurance period.

If an accident occurs, the motor liability insurance bonus will drop for the next insurance period. The bonus you have during the next insurance period depends on how many accidents leading to a claim for damage to be indemnified by your motor liability insurance you cause during the insurance period. If the bonus of your motor liability insurance is 80%, for example, and you get into one accident compensated from your motor liability insurance, your bonus for the next insurance period will be 70%.

Bonus cover protects against bonus loss

You will receive bonus cover for your motor liability insurance after having driven two insurance periods with the 80% maximum bonus. Thanks to the bonus cover, a single road accident coverable under motor liability insurance during an insurance period will not reduce the motor liability insurance bonus that you have earned.

Comparing motor liability insurance policies – pay attention to these:

Comparing motor liability insurance policies is usually simple, as no matter the insurance provider, the policy is required by law and always covers all bodily injuries as well as property damage suffered by the party not at fault in traffic accidents. The deductible in motor liability insurance is €0 regardless of the insurer. There are thus no appreciable differences in insurance cover when comparing different motor liability insurance policies.

Despite this, comparing motor liability insurance policies is possible and useful, as depending on the insurance provider, there are differences in bonus systems that affect the price of the insurance. To compare motor liability insurance policies, you can pay attention to the following insurance features:

  • Initial bonus of motor liability insurance
  • Maximum bonus of motor liability insurance
  • Development of motor liability insurance bonus
  • Inclusion of bonus cover in motor liability insurance and when bonus cover is activated.
  • Price of motor liability insurance

Pohjola Insurance’s old and new motor liability insurance

Pohjola Insurance’s motor liability insurance has been revised. The motor liability insurance for cars was revised on 1 April 2020 and that for motorcycles on 1 April 2018. The above information concerns the new motor liability insurance for cars now available for purchase.

If you protected your vehicle with a motor liability insurance from us before the revision of the motor liability insurance, you can easily update the policy online.

When you buy a new motor liability insurance policy for your vehicle, the old contract is terminated, and the new motor liability insurance enters into force.

Motor liability insurance abroad

Your motor liability insurance must be in force if you intend to drive abroad. You can order a Green Card for your vehicle through the op.fi service, which will serve as certificate of a valid motor liability insurance abroad.

You can drive a vehicle in the Nordic countries without a Green Card, provided that your vehicle has Finnish licence plates. The Green Card is not mandatory within the EU or EEA either.

Motor liability insurance and households with several vehicles

With the revised motor liability insurance, you will receive the same bonus, in accordance with your accumulated insurance and claims history, for all cars or motorcycles you have insured. Therefore, if you have accumulated an 80% maximum bonus for one car, you will immediately receive the same maximum bonus from your new secondary car.

Retaining motor liability insurance bonus for the primary and secondary car in case of accident

Any loss caused by one car or motorcycle you are driving only affects the bonus of the motor liability insurance of that vehicle from the beginning of the following insurance period. The loss does not directly affect valid insurance policies of other cars or motorcycles. Instead, the effect of the loss event is realised only after you obtain a new vehicle.

How is motor liability insurance bonus determined?

Motor liability insurance bonus is determined by the policyholder's personal claims history. If you do not have a history of previous claims, motor liability insurance bonus increases from the initial 40% to the full 80% in as little as five years if you do not have any claims.

You will receive bonus cover for your motor liability insurance after you have driven two years with a maximum 80% bonus without a loss covered by motor liability insurance. With bonus cover, you will not lose your maximum bonus in the event of loss or accident.

A loss covered by the insurance will reduce your bonus according to the motor liability insurance bonus table.

How are motor liability insurance bonuses for two or more vehicles determined?

Your motor liability insurance bonus is based on your insurance and claims history and applies to all insured vehicles in the same household. For example, if you have earned the maximum 80% bonus and purchase a second car for your household, you can insure the new car with the same bonus.

When should I buy motor liability insurance?

After you have bought a vehicle, you have seven days to take out motor liability insurance. You can also take out voluntary comprehensive motor vehicle insurance when buying motor liability insurance.

You can purchase motor vehicle insurance and replace an existing policy with a new one even if you do not have a vehicle.

How is the deductible of motor liability insurance determined?

Motor liability insurance does not have a deductible.

How is the price of motor liability insurance determined?

The price of motor liability insurance is determined by your motor liability insurance bonus and pricing factors applied to motor vehicle insurance. These factors include, among others, the driver’s age and the make and model of the insured vehicle.

Under whose name is motor liability insurance taken?

Motor liability insurance must be taken out under the name of the vehicle’s owner or primary user. If the vehicle’s primary user and owner are not the same person, the primary user must be entered in the Vehicular and Driver Data Register as the vehicle holder before motor liability insurance can be issued in the person’s name.

I am planning on buying a first moped for my child. Does motor liability insurance for mopeds also have a starting bonus of 40% and a maximum bonus of 80%?

Motor liability insurance is mandatory for road going cars, mopeds, light quadricycles and all-terrain vehicles.

However, not all vehicles earn a no-claims bonus from motor liability insurance. In motor liability insurance, no-claims bonus is not granted for light quadricycles, mopeds, quad bikes, snowmobiles, campervans, light trailers, unregistered motorcycles or tractors. Therefore, mopeds do not earn a non-claims bonus from motor liability insurance. See below for more information on moped insurance and other vehicles with a motor liability insurance without a no-claims bonus.
