OP Financial Group’s new sustainability programme: A sustainable economy builds on responsibility for the environment, people and corporate governance

OP Financial Group plays an active role in enabling society to make the sustainability transition and promoting a greener, more sustainable tomorrow in the financial sector. The new sustainability programme is built around three sustainability themes that guide the operations, future and impact of OP Financial Group.

OP Financial Group aims to be a sustainability forerunner in the financial sector. Based on our new sustainability programme, we will markedly decrease emissions across our loan and investment portfolios, promote diversity in our operations and further improve the sustainability competencies of our personnel.

“Sustainability lies at the core of OP Financial Group’s business and mission. Our new sustainability programme aims to further strengthen the role of OP Financial Group as the sustainability forerunner in the financial sector. Through our actions, we want to build a sustainable tomorrow and enable sustainable choices for our customers,” says Timo Ritakallio, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of OP Financial Group.

The financial sector too must respond to the new requirements amidst the rapidly changing business environment and increasing awareness about sustainability issues. We listened to the views of various stakeholder groups, such as our employees and customers, to prepare OP Financial Group’s new sustainability programme.

“Based on the views of our stakeholders, our sustainability programme emphasises factors such as responsibility for the environment, OP’s role in society to promote financial literacy, and caring for the wellbeing of our employees,” says Annina Tanhuanpää, Head of ESG and Corporate Responsibility at OP Financial Group.

OP Financial Group’s updated sustainability programme is built around three key themes:

  • Climate and the environment: We will offer sustainable financing and investment products to our customers and markedly decrease emissions across our loan and investment portfolios. We will promote biodiversity and are committed to becoming carbon neutral in our operations by 2025.

  • People and communities: We will promote a diverse and non-discriminatory culture and the wellbeing of local communities. We will support people in managing their personal finances.

  • Corporate governance: We will integrate sustainability with all our business operations and expect our partners to act responsibly. We will increase diversity in our governing bodies and further improve the sustainability competencies of our personnel.

OP Cooperative’s Board of Directors decided on the revision of OP Financial Group’s sustainability programme and its objectives on 21 June 2022. OP Cooperative’s Supervisory Council confirmed the Board’s decision on 25 August 2022.
