Right now: scammers, who falsely claim to be from OP, are calling from foreign numbers

We have been contacted by a number of customers about scam calls from overseas numbers. The caller often speaks fluent Finnish and claims that the call is from OP. In fact, the call is not from us.

The scam call starts with a recording about risks related to a bank account or user ID, or which refers to logging in from a new device. It asks you to select the number 0, for example, which will supposedly connect you to OP Pohjola's security department or its equivalent.

The scammers want their victims to reveal their banking usernames and passwords or to transfer funds from their accounts. In fact, real banks do not have a secure account to which a customer can transfer funds for safekeeping. In cases like this, the money always ends up with the scammer.

If the victim's user ID is revealed during the call, the scammer may say that the confirmation requests that come next should be accepted in order to "cancel payments". The truth is that the victim is confirming payments, made by the criminal, from the victim's accounts. Read all notifications carefully. Confirm only actions that you began.

How to spot a scam?

Scammers try to create a sense of urgency or fear about financial losses, to prevent their victims from thinking about decisions. The people behind scams are professional criminals, whose daily work involves manipulating people. You should be suspicious of any callers who urge you to act quickly.

Remember:

  • OP would never contact you, or anyone else, from a foreign phone number.
  • Banks do not have "secure accounts" to which customers can transfer money to keep it safe. In cases like this, the money always ends up with the scammer.
  • Never reveal your user ID to anyone, even if they ask you for it.
  • Read all notifications carefully. Confirm only actions that you began.
  • If you use OP-mobile, you can request confirmation of call details during a phone call. As a user of the OP-mobile app, you can use the confirmation of call feature to make sure that you are really speaking to an expert from OP Pohjola. Read our instructions on how to confirm phone calls
  • If you suspect a scam, you can always hang up and contact the OP Customer Service yourself.
