Calls of this kind have been received from foreign and Finnish numbers. The caller speaks fluent Finnish, may be a person or a recording, and typically claims to be a bank employee or cybersecurity representative.
For example, the caller may claim that somebody outside Finland is making a payment from the customer's account or taking out a loan in the customer's name. For this reason, the customer is urged to prevent this or transfer their money to a ‘secure account’ by confirming the payment or revealing their banking user ID to the caller. In reality, the customer is duped into confirming a payment made by a criminal and giving their banking user identifiers to a criminal.
One of the scam calls was described as follows: "First, there was a recording claiming suspicious activity in the account and requesting the customer to select number 1 to connect to OP's security number for investigation. When the customer did this and the call was connected to a scammer, the customer was asked to identify themself with their online banking user ID in order to prevent any credit transfers."
What should you do if you receive a scam call?
- Stay calm. Scammers want to make you panic and create a sense of urgency by claiming that your money is at risk in some way and that you must act immediately.
- Remember that the bank will never ask your online banking user ID or password via phone or message.
- The bank doesn't have any 'secure account' where you could transfer funds to keep them safe. In such a situation, your money will always end up in the scammer's account.
- Check the correct Customer Service number on your bank's homepage.
- If you use OP-mobile, you can request confirmation of call details during the phone call
