This is how the insurance and FirstVet service can help you if your dog falls ill or if something happens:
It’s advisable to register/create an account to the FirstVet service directly after purchasing Dog Insurance. This way help is always close at hand, if your dog is injured or falls ill.
1. If you have any concerns over your dog’s health, always book an appointment through the FirstVet service first. With the FirstVet service, you can consult a vet remotely by means of a video call even during the same day.
2. The FirstVet online vet will give you an evaluation of the dog’s state of health and instructions for further treatment, if necessary. If no further measures are needed, you will get clear instructions for home care. The remote veterinarian's consultation fee is €0 for our insurance customers.
3. If the online vet recommends that you book an appointment for further treatment, book an appointment with our veterinary clinic partner. When you visit our partner veterinary clinic, the cost of the veterinarian's appointment is not too high. You can find the nearest veterinary clinic partner easily at Pohjola Claim Help.
The veterinary clinic partners will help you if the FirstVet recommends further treatment
If the FirstVet online vet recommends further examinations for your dog at a veterinary clinic, the easiest thing to do is visit our veterinary clinic partner. Our partner will provide the care your dog needs, and you do not have to make a loss report afterwards.
Our partner will take care of filing a claim for you at the clinic. At the clinic, you only pay the deductible in accordance with your Dog Insurance, and the clinic will invoice Pohjola Insurance for the remainder of the fee.

Dog insurance guarantees best treatment
With dog insurance, you protect your pet against illnesses and injuries already as a puppy. With comprehensive dog insurance, you can give your dog the best possible treatment without having to worry about the vet’s bill.
You can choose from three types of cover:
- Dog insurance covers if your dog is lost or dies due to an accident or illness according to the sum insured you choose.
- Medical treatment expenses insurance covers, for example, veterinary expenses, X-ray and ultrasound scans, laboratory tests, medication sold in pharmacies and dental care due to an illness or injury. Animal liability insurance covers losses caused by the dog to third parties, such as if your dog damages a neighbour’s property or causes injuries.
We recommend that you include medical treatment expenses insurance in your dog’s insurance as veterinary expenses can rise as high as thousands of euros. Medical treatment expenses insurance also gives you free access to the FirstVet remote veterinary service. The service is open daily and available anywhere on the app.
Dog insurance can be purchased for both puppies and adult dogs
Dog insurance can be taken out for a puppy that is at least six weeks old. Dog insurance is worth taking for a small puppy that is only beginning to learn about the world. By insuring your dog while it is still a puppy and choosing a maximum compensation of 3,000 euros, you get the most comprehensive insurance cover possible.
It is also possible to insure an adult pedigree or mixed-breed dog that is up to 7 years old. Medical treatment expenses insurance provides cover against Illness and accidents throughout the dog’s life with no upper age limit. Dog insurance covers against death and liability losses end when the dog turns 10 years.
Insurance for rescue dogs
Are you adopting a rescue dog? Dog insurance can also be taken out for a rescue dog without having to submit a veterinarian’s statement.
If you are unsure about your rescue dog’s exact date of birth, origin or breed, you can insure it as a mixed-breed dog. If the dog’s breed is known but it is not approved by the Finnish Kennel Club, include the breed in the dog’s name field when purchasing the insurance, for example Australian Labradoodle Nero.
What does dog insurance cover?
Dog insurance coverage depends on the individual cover options you have chosen for the insurance policy. Medical treatment expenses insurance covers the cost of visits to a vet, examinations and medications, for example. Animal liability insurance covers damage caused by the dog to others for which you are legally liable. Dog insurance also compensates for the loss or death of the dog.
How veterinary expenses are covered
Leo, a mixed-breed dog, broke his tooth while playing. The veterinary expenses of removing the tooth amounted to 600 euros, which were covered by Leo’s medical treatment expenses insurance. As the visit to the veterinarian was the first for the insurance period, the deductible was 70 euros. The remaining amount was 530 euros, of which you pay a coinsurance of 30% or 159 euros. You pay a total of 229 euros for the visit to the vet, and Pohjola Insurance covers the remainder of 371 euros.
If Leo is taken to a vet again during the same insurance period, you only pay 30% of the veterinary expenses. The deductible of 70 euros is only paid once during the insurance period.

How is the price of dog insurance determined?
The price of dog insurance depends on your dog’s characteristics, such as breed and age, your place of residence, and the scope of insurance cover you choose. The price of dog insurance is also affected by the maximum compensation, sum insured and deductible you select for the covers.
The cheapest dog insurance is not always the best option, as insuring your furry friend as comprehensively as possible will often affect the total price of your dog insurance.
If you are a Pohjola Insurance prime customer, you are entitled to a discount on dog insurance. If you are also an OP cooperative bank owner-customer, you also get an additional discount and can use OP bonuses to pay insurance premiums.
Dog insurance is granted on the basis of a health declaration
Dog Insurance and other forms of Animal Insurance are granted based on a health declaration, which is easy to fill in at op.fi.
Dog insurance can often be granted even if the dog is not fully healthy. The decision is always made on the basis of the health declaration.
Dog insurance covers the medical treatment expenses of illnesses and injuries. If the illness began before the dog insurance was purchased, the treatment expenses are generally not covered. If you take out insurance for your dog while it is still young and healthy, you get the best possible coverage.
Is dog insurance also valid on trips abroad?
Dog insurance is valid throughout the Nordic countries. In other EU countries, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, the insurance is valid temporarily for a maximum of 12 months. You can expand the territorial limits of medical treatment expenses and animal insurance by contacting our customer service team.
If your dog is sick or injured while you are abroad, take it to a local vet for treatment. You can claim compensation for the veterinary expenses after the visit on OP-mobile or at op.fi.
Does a dog need to be insured?
Dog insurance is not mandatory, but it helps you ensure that your dog will get good treatment. You also protect your personal finances in the event of unexpected costs. The cost of medications, visits to a vet, and laboratory and X-ray examinations can be surprisingly high. Dog insurance compensates for expenses of up to 3,000 euros during an insurance period of one year.
