500-euro banknotes will go out of use over time

When a new series of euro banknotes is introduced, the 500-euro banknote will go out of use. The banknote will continue to be legal tender, and the existing 500-euro banknotes can be used in the future, too. However, new banknotes will no longer be produced and they have not been issued since 27 January 2019, in accordance with European Central Bank’s announcement.

Introducing the series of banknotes has to do with preventing forgery. The latest technology has been used for the security features of the new series. That is why the banknotes are even harder to counterfeit. So far, 5-, 10-, 20- and 50-euro banknotes have been changed. 100-euro and 200-euro banknotes are the last ones to be changed. They will be issued on 28 May 2019.
