OP’s Central Cooperative switches to carbon-neutral waste management

OP’s Central Cooperative is switching to carbon-neutral waste management for its offices. OP is compensating the emissions caused by waste management for its Central Cooperative offices in 2020 and is switching to carbon-neutral waste management services going forward. We will measure the carbon footprint of our waste management and compensate the emissions through certified reforestation efforts.

OP’s Central Cooperative has offices in Finland in Helsinki, Tampere, Kuopio, Oulu, Joensuu, Turku, Vaasa and Pori. Emissions are caused mainly by waste disposal and transport. As zero emissions from waste management are impossible to achieve, we are compensating all remaining emissions.

“We have made significant strides toward reducing emissions at our offices. Compensating emissions from waste management is a natural next step. We have worked actively with our partner L&T in reducing waste and improving sorting and recycling,” says Anne Koskela, Head of Property and Facility Management at OP.

We have developed an office management system based on the WWF’s Green Office concept. Both our Vallila office and several OP cooperative banks already use the system. The system is designed to reduce the CO2 emissions of our offices and our operations as a whole, increase our staff’s awareness of environmental issues and promote the introduction of ecological practices.
