OP Vuokratuotto converts first residential property to ground source heat

This August, OP Vuokratuotto’s housing company As Oy Helsingin Pajuniityntie 3-5 in Etelä-Haaga converted from district heating to ground source heat.  The property’s yearly carbon emissions were cut by 74 tonnes, the equivalent of around 600 round-trip flights from Helsinki to Stockholm.

“The decision to switch to ground source heat came easy as in addition to environmental benefits, the investment repays itself within a reasonable period of time. We are currently highly interested in renewable energy,” says Property Manager Matti Puromäki.

The property was equipped with a total of 17 ground source heat pumps over the course of two months of installation and excavation work. In addition, solar panels were installed on the buildings’ rooftops to help offset the increased electricity consumption caused by the pumps.  All in all, the project was completed on schedule and in co-operation with residents.  With experiences from the project positive, the possibilities offered by ground source heat will be explored going forward, particularly in new property developments.
