What does boat insurance cover?
When you have taken out boat insurance, it is easy to enjoy boating and freedom. Careful boaters avoid many dangers by anticipating them, but should anything happen, boat insurance will cover losses to your motor boat. The boat’s comprehensive motor vehicle insurance covers if, for example, your boat is stolen or damaged when running aground, in a fire or during transportation.
Medium Motor Insurance for a boat excludes boat losses, such as collisions or running aground, from compensation, but does compensate theft and fire losses, however. Our boat insurance policies always include liability and legal expenses insurance.
Boat insurance for your motor boat covers, for example,
- the hull
- engine and navigation equipment
- laying-up blocks and covers
- essential machines related to boat use.
Insurance on the basis of horsepower
Inboard, outboard, sterndrive – each of these can be insured with a boat insurance for a motor boat. Boat insurance is available for motor boats with a motor that is more than 20 horsepower.
For boats with a smaller outboard motor can be insured with small boat insurance. Rowing boats and outboard motors of up to 5 horsepower, on the other hand, are covered by MyHome Insurance for up to 1,500 euros.
Please remember too that you must register your motor boat if its hull length is at least 5.5 metres or the engine power given by the manufacturer is more than 20 horsepower.
The commonest loss is running aground, but losses can occur also when the boat is not being used.
Trossi service ensures free assistance for your boat
No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen aboard. Saving a boat that is out of order usually costs if lives are not in danger. The cost price is charged for towing a boat that is not in an emergency; this can run for up to hundreds of euros, depending on the size of the rescue boat and the duration of the operation.
If you subscribe to the Trossi service of the Finnish Lifeboat Institution, your boat will be saved free of charge. If your journey is interrupted, you will be towed to the nearest port and assisted in finding a repairer. By subscribing to the Trossi service you also support voluntary rescue services at sea and on lakes.
Our boat insurance is valid automatically without any extension
- in the territorial waters and inland waterways of Finland, Sweden and Denmark and the territorial waters of Norway on the coastal areas of the country
- in the Baltic Sea and its bays, on Saimaa and Kiel Canals and Kattegat and Skagerrak
- when storing and transporting the boat/yacht in these countries.
Boat insurance and the territorial scope of the boat’s general liability insurance can be extended against an extra premium to other parts of Europe and also outside Europe.
