International equity investment
International equities are within your reach: thousands of equities around the world.More options
Looking outside Finland is advisable because international markets make it easier to diversify investments geographically and on a sector-specific basis. Thousands of equities from up to 14 different trading venues and over 850 ETFs are available to you.
Inexpensive
You will always trade in foreign equities at low cost. Trading fee starting from 0.17% or a minimum of €8. The more your trade, the lower your trading fees.
Easy
Trade in foreign equities in the same familiar way as in Finnish equities. Currency exchange is automatic if you trade in non-euro equities. The currency exchange fee is 0.30%.
Invest in international equities as easily as in Finnish equities
The Nasdaq Helsinki represents less than 1% of the world stock markets. This means that you will expand your investment options, diversify risk and ensure steady returns through diversification by investing internationally. You can buy stocks in many familiar foreign companies outside the Nasdaq Helsinki, whose products you use in your everyday life. International markets also offer a wide range of ETFs.
The requirements for beginning international equity trading are the same as for the Finnish market, and you will not need any additional custody. This means that if you are already trading in the Finnish equities, you can immediately start trading in international equities, too.
When you are trading in non-euro equities, you must also take currency exchange fees into account. You will not need to exchange the currency yourself, it is done automatically for you. The currency exchange fee is 0.30% of the transaction price and it is calculated using the average rate used by OP Corporate Bank, which is updated four times a day.
Analyses of foreign equities in Finnish
To help you in company selections, you get equity analyses in Finnish covering foreign companies. As our equity investor client, you can, free of charge, read equity analyses of a hundred foreign listed companies, such as Tesla, Apple, Microsoft, JPMorgan, McDonald’s, BMW, Adidas, Volvo and L’Oréal. Slightly over half of the companies come from the USA and the rest from Europe or elsewhere in the world. The analyses are produced by our partner Kepler Cheuvreux
What should you take into account when investing internationally?
When trading in international equities, please note the following:
- Transaction tax, if any, and the trading fee differing from trading in Finland.
- Tax practices and the currency risk when investing outside the euro area
- A stock exchange might require the use of round lots (orders of certain size)
- Order lengths might differ from those in Finland. Each stock exchange may have its own particularities
- For the USA, however, additional documents may be needed to comply with the Qualified Intermediary (QI) requirements. If you cannot trade in the US stock market, request your bank branch to solve the issue for you.
Another thing to note in international equity investment is that the various markets have their own fees and possibly also transaction taxes. For example, France levies a 0.30% transaction tax on the purchase of the biggest French companies’ equities. A financial transaction tax of 0.20% is collected on purchases of equities of Spanish companies as well. The Government of Spain collects the tax on the purchase of equities issued by companies whose market cap exceeds 1 billion euros.
